#4 Waves

The Waves Q10 is a great tool to use along side your other EQ plugins but holds its own when picking out delicate frequencies and helps reduce hums buzzes and clicks.

Waves Q10

As with most Waves plugins you can either get this one when it’s on sale or if its included in a bundle. I picked mine up included with the Waves Gold bundle. If I’m honest, I hardly use it but when I do it really holds its own better than any other EQ to pin point detail.

A classic compressor with all the mod cons, the Waves Q10 equalization plug-in offers a whole host of EQ options to meet every need, including ten bands of fully parametric EQ and over 200 filters in the extensive setup library.

This is an edition produced for Waves’ 25th Anniversary and  you can choose between Legacy and Modern interfaces and take advantage of upgrades that include Proportional Q filters, selectable band control, and Double Precision 64-bit processing. Whether you need gentle shaping or surgical control the Waves Q10 offers the lot.

#3 Izotope Neutron

Not just an EQ, but Izotope Elements is a Channel strip offering compression, EQ and transients as well as much more.

Izotope Neutron Elements

About Neutron

They call it a smarter way to mix for musicians and mix engineers. Achieve a clear, well-balanced mix with Neutron’s innovative new mixing and analysis tools.

Control every aspect of your music, from the visual soundstage of your tracks to the overall balance of your mix—all with iZotope’s award-winning digital signal processing.

Izotope offer a range of products from the cut down Elements version, a Standard to the full blown Advanced. For the home studio, non professional I’d say elements was more than enough for the basic tasks.

My method to use this is to let the auto detect EQ find the spots which are not right, then use your skills you have learnt with your ears to pick out the frequencies.

It gets ball park, but still needs the human touch to perfect. Not a bad thing for training your ears to the sound of your mix. It’s my number 3 choice just for the presets.

#2 TDR Nova Gentlemans Edition

TDR Nova GE (Gentlemans Edition) is the big brother of TDR Nova. Is is NOVA GE is a parallel dynamic equalizer and a firm favourite of mine

TDR Nova Gentlemans edition

About TDR Nova

TDR Nova GE is a great tool to have in your arsenal and features the following – Arametric equalization, dynamic equalization, frequency selective compression/expansion, multiband compression/expansion, wideband compression/expansion.

NOVA GE includes a total of six dynamic EQ bands, each with independent dynamics processing ranging from downward compression over upward compression, upward expansion, up to downward expansion including gating.

This tools is a must have for a home music producer. Even just getting the free TDR Nova is a great start, but the TDR Nova GE unlocks a whole load more and extra dynamic bands too. Great for taming the harsh frequencies when a static EQ just does not cut the mustard.

#1 Fab Filter Pro Q3

This is such an easy EQ to use. The Fab Filter Pro Q3 is the one I would spend my money on.

FabFilter Pro Q3

What is so great about Fab Filter?

An equalizer is probably the tool you use most while mixing and mastering, so you need the best of the best. With FabFilter Pro-Q 3, you get the highest possible sound quality, a very extensive feature set, and a gorgeous, innovative interface with unrivalled ease of use.

FabFilter Pro-Q 3 is designed to help you achieve your sound in the quickest way possible. Via the large interactive EQ display, you can create bands where you need them, enable dynamic EQ for any band, and select and edit multiple bands at once.

Pro-Q 3 offers everything that a demanding engineer could wish for: top-quality linear phase operation in addition to the zero latency and unique Natural Phase modes, smooth dynamic EQ, per-band mid/side processing, full surround support (up to Dolby Atmos 7.1.2), an intelligent solo feature, optional Auto Gain and a built-in, fully customizable spectrum analyzer.

Clean working in Bitwig Studio and very similar to the Bitwig Native EQ, you’ll find that the useability of this EQ is so simple to pick up and performs well enought to be good for working on every channel.

#Bonus EQ-5

Bonus EQ? Maybe not, but it’s built in to Bitwig Studio. it’s very versatile and seeing you already have it as a Bitwig user, then why not use it?

Bitwig Studio EQ-5

Bitwig Studio Stock EQ Plugin

Much like the FabFilter EQ, the Bitwig Studio built in EQ-5 is a top product for the home studio producer. It performs really well, and automation within the modulators allow you to do some funky effects risers and buildups. As with everything in Bitwig Studio, it can all be modulated.

Use the EQ5 tool for your mix buss or mastering chain to get some great results which are on par with the others mentioned in this article.

The Bitwig Studio devices offer a lot for the home studio producer so before looking at 3rd party plugins, take a look what is in the box first of all. You may be surpised!
