The all new Things-Motor plugin effect from AudioThing is a really unique morphing rotor effect. It was released on the 22nd of March 2021, and It’s available at half price on Plugin Boutique, through to April 30th.

AudioThing have made it in collaboration with Hainbach aka the Bob Ross of old soviet test equipment.

What is Things – Motor?

Similar to their previous collaboration, the Wires echo, Motors is another avant garde effect, turned VST.

Based on the “Crystal Palace” built for the BBC Radiophonic workshop by Dave Young, way back in 1967. It’s essentially a one-of-a-kind effect, which employed a big capacitor rotating on a motor. It allowed for speed-dependent switching of up to 16 channels. This created a range of effects from almost granular tones, to sweet, sublime modulations.

Things – Motor takes this concept and expands on it, by combining two signals with sidechain. This makes it extremely easy and straightforward to set up.

The switching is controlled by a variable LFO, which allows for very smooth morphing, choppy aggresive sounds, as well as much more. Modulating signals at audio rate is also possible, and it creates interesting, almost, ring-mod like effects.

Expanding even more, a vibrato and panner module, that’s synced to the “motor”, as well as some analog-like sound shaping, to round out the sound.

Things – Motor is an effect that’s so unique and unlike much else, that you migh never have considered that you might need it. That is, until you actually hear what it does, and the sounds you can get from it.

Hainbach made a comprehensive video along the Sam at LOOKMUMNOCOMPUTER, and you can watch it below.
