When you’re sitting down all day, whether it be at an office or the studio, if you don’t have the right lumbar support, you’re going to run into problems.

And, if you already have, like me, you’re probably wondering what the best studio chairs for back pain are.

Due to my newfound love (my lower back pain), I researched far and wide to find the best chairs to be able to support my back and prevent further injury or discomfort while I was working.

Then I thought, why not put it into an article for other people facing the same issue?

When you’re working in an environment where you don’t move a lot of the time, (like a recording studio) you seriously don’t want to neglect the bonuses of having a good chair.

I sure wish I didn’t, because otherwise I wouldn’t be experiencing back pain at 23. The music studio is no different.

You need a great, comfortable chair that supports you when you’re feeling low because your snare sounds like sh*t, and gives your ease of movement to be able to dial in a compression setting over one side of the room, then play a synth line on the other side of the room.

This article will run you through the best value recording studio chairs for back issues on the market right now.

Oh btw, I’m not gonna tell you to buy some crap shipped from China, like the other articles do :)))

I’m gonna show you the very best, premium quality chairs & how you can find them for cheap, second hand & a few brand new chairs that are awesome!

ikea markus best studio chair reddit review

The Ikea Markus is a robust, full size chair, that offers support for your spine and has a built in headrest for you to use.

It does everything you’d expect your music production chair to do – it reclines, goes up and down & swivels around 360 degrees.

Ikea have pulled out all the stops with this chair, also giving it a slight ergonomic curve to support your lower back & help to reduce back pain while working or sitting for long hours.

Alongside this, the Ikea Markus has a soft, padded seat for your comfort & uses mesh on the back rest to allow for airflow and keep you cool while working on that mix.

It’s a big chair that supports up to 240lbs, has been sized to both American & European measurement requirements & comes with a whopping 12 year warranty!

You can pick up the Ikea Markus extremely cheap & even cheaper 2nd hand. I’ve seen some go for $12!

One of the downsides to the Markus is that the wheels have been built using plastic.

This is a problem if you have carpet in your studio, as it will create resistance and cause the flimsy plastic wheels to break.

Ikea Markus Features:

  • Ergonomic curve to support back properly
  • Breathable mesh material
  • Soft cushioned seat
  • Adjustable seat height
  • Built-in headrest
  • Supports 240lbs

Hbada Office Task

Ikea Nilserik

ikea nilserik standing studio chair

Ikea consistently provides some of the best furniture on the market for the price range.

And, if you’re looking for a good desk, chair or anything of that nature (on a budget), it’s always good to check to see what they have to offer.

The Ikea Nilserik is perfect for people looking into standing desks.

Standing desks are really the best possible option for you when it comes to removing back pain. The is in its natural position when standing, so it only makes sense to be standing for the majority of the day.

The Nilserik provides an in-between – it doesn’t quite let you sit down fully, but provides enough support to rest your tired legs & feet if you need to for a few moments.

It does this by offering a padded, elevated position that is built with comfort in mind.

You can get the Nilserik in 2 different colours – black and white.

It’s a great value option for people with a standing desk, who want to rest for a moment, before striding to their feet again.

Premium Chairs

Below you’ll find our list of the best premium studio chairs on the market.

These will all be above the $500, unless you’re buying them second hand. These chairs are the best to invest in if you want longevity & comfort.

They will support your back, prevent and alleviate back pain incredibly well. In short – they are worth the money.

Herman Miller Aeron Chair

herman miller aeron number 1 best studio chair

Herman Miller are the Rolls Royce of office chairs.

Much less glamorous, I know, but they really are the best quality, most ergonomically designed & built to last chairs on the market.

(you know you’re getting older when a good office chair excites you)

You’ll find Herman Miller’s Aeron chair in almost every professional recording studio, simply because it is the best quality studio chair hands down.

Made from incredibly high quality, soft mesh, this chair is a dream to sit in for long periods of time. But, it isn’t just comfy to sit in. It also has some of the best ergonomic lumbar support you’ll find in any studio chair.

It has been designed to sit you in an upright position, which is similar to that of a standing body – chest open, pelvis tilted slightly forward. This is supposed to help put your spine into the most natural & healthy seated position.

All Herman Miller chairs are completely adjustable & have the movement + mobility you’ll want in a music production chair. The Aeron also uses a different material to mesh, which is far more comfortable & less irritable on the skin.

From the previous model, they took the feedback on board, took away the foam & replaced it with a fabric called Pellicle.

This makes the chair lighter, more airy & keeps the person sitting in it cool. It also removes all the downsides of purchasing a mesh chair, like the sagging over time, the hard & abrasive material + general discomfort when using low quality mesh.

Together (Pellicle & the lumbar support system) “…create total spinal support – calculated, localised support that moves the skeletal system into a position that provides ultimate spinal support.” (Herman Miller)

What makes Herman Miller so great is their warranty support.

They cover your chair for 12 years & don’t charge you extra for parts or labour.

When you buy a Herman Miller chair, you know you are getting a chair that will not only help your back pain, but will last over a decade.

Now, Herman Miller are a premium brand, so their prices are extra high, but you can always pick up 2nd hand models on eBay extremely cheap.

Have a look around for a good deal & get a 2nd hand, premium chair – you won’t regret it.

(it’ll be better than buying a new lower range chair)

For the best experience, get a headrest to use with the Aeron. This will give you support of your whole body.

Herman Miller Aeron Chair Features:

  • Patented technology Pellicle for extreme comfort
  • Height adjustable
  • Adjustable armrests
  • 360 degree swivel
  • Ergonomic design
  • Breathable mesh material

Herman Miller Mirra

herman miller mirra studio chair

Another chair from Herman Miller that is an absolute dream to sit in.

It looks a lot like it’s brother, the Aeron, but comes in at a more affordable price – with a few less features.

The Mirra however, has been designed to support people who move a lot while they’re working (and no that doesn’t mean standing up).

If you’re the type of person who likes to scroll your chair around the room, fidget, stretch, bend and turn while working on a mix or music production session, then this is the perfect chair to match you.

The Mirra 2 moves with you, using dynamic surfaces that respond to your slightest movements and adjust the chair’s settings to fit your current position. It’s also been designed to allow you to move your body freely and naturally.

It comes with an incredible lumbar support (which they call posture fit), that keeps your spine properly aligned as you sit.

Alongside that, they use a patented material called TriFlex, which has been expertly designed to keep you comfortable.

TriFlex is much softer, more comfortable & durable than traditional mesh used in most office chairs, so you can expect your Mirra to retain its everlasting comfort.

Also, with a 12 year warranty, that doesn’t charge you for parts or labour, you can put your trust in Herman Miller.

You can pick up Herman Miller Mirra chairs pretty cheap over on eBay, so be sure to check that out if budget is your concern.

Herman Miller Mirra Chair Features:

  • Patented technology for incredible back support
  • Breathable mesh material
  • Adjustable height
  • Ergonomic char design
  • A long time warranty of 12 years

The Herman Miller Embody is incredible for back pain & has been designed with more than 20 physicians and PHDs in the field of biomechanics, vision, physical therapy and ergonomics.

As a result, this is the best studio chair for natural alignment and lumbar support.

Haworth Fern

haworth fern office chair

Haworth are another premium studio chair company that offers chairs that boast extreme comfort and support for people with back pain.

The Haworth Fern is one of their top of the range chairs & is the ergonomic office chair in their range.

It has a fully adjustable lumbar support, that goes all the way up and down your spine & uses a state of the art patented Wave Suspension system to give you back comfort and stability.

The Haworth Fern is so good that it has received a plethora of awards (who knew chairs could get awards eh?)

It’s a fabric chair, with a padded seatthat has been designed to distribute your weight evenly across the chair, providing improved circulation and blood flow to your lower back.

Unfortunately though, the Haworth Fern is ridiculously expensive. Coming in at over $2000 for the chair, you’re going to need to have a heck of a lot saved to purchase this.

That being said, it is the Lamborghini of chairs.

Haworth Fern Home Studio Chair Features:

  • You can adjust the seat height
  • Waterfall seat
  • Expertly crafted lumbar support from top to bottom
  • Fabric upholstered design
  • Patented technology that improves blood flow
  • Adjustable arm rests
  • 360 swivel
  • Full recline to lean back

Steelcase Gesture Office Chair

steelcase gesture office chair

Another incredible studio chair from Steelcase, that will help prevent & alleviate back pain.

The Steelcase Gesture has been expertly designed to interact with your posture. They say that “it’s the first chair design to support… interaction with today’s technologies” (Steelcase).

But what do they mean by that?

Essentially, the Gesture moves with you & adjusts to how you’re positioned. That means, if you’re going from your computer to some hardware or even checking your phone (if you can even get signal in the nuclear studio bunker), the Gesture will provide support in all positions.

So, if you’ve ever found yourself craning over your computer, with your face about 5 cm from the screen trying to dial in a EQ, then, unlike other studio chairs, the Gesture has been designed to support you.

It’s got an incredible lumbar support, and is upholstered with fabric as well as a beautifully padded seat for you to get comfy on.

The Steelcase Gesture is by far the sturdiest chair on this list, being able to withstand 400lbs of weight.

It has been designed with American and European standard measurements in mind & is best used with a headrest.

It’s one of the more expensive chairs on this list (even second hand), but it is more than worth the investment.

Steelcase Gesture Features:

  • State of the art back support for long hours in the recording studio
  • Height adjustable, waterfall seat
  • Adjustable armrests
  • Full recline to lean back
  • 360 swivel
  • Adjustable headrest

Crown Seating Stealth Studio Chair

crown seating stealth studio chair back pain

Crown Seating are high end audio chair specialists. They use a patented ZenWave motion technology that supposedly makes you feel like you’re floating on water when seated in the Crown Stealth chair.

It’s another premium chair that shows it’s premium.

With the Stealth you can move around the studio with ease, and without applying harmful pressure to do so.

It uses Active Tilt seat plate pivots to provide a proper body alignment when you’re seated for long periods of time.

Alongside a free floating, mid back support will give you continuous support when you lean forward to tweak a sound or setting on some hardware units.

On top of all that, it has a perfectly crafted, convex shape backrest that will provide extreme comfort. This massages your lower back and improves blood flow around the body.

Due to its mesh design, it’s completely breathable and will keep your cool during long sessions at the studio.

You can grab the Crown Seating Steal Studio chair from Sweetwater, which btw is a dedicated music store.

Unfortunately, when looking for cheaper, 2nd hand options available online for this chair, I couldn’t find any. So, if you’re going to invest in this, be prepared to pay the full $500+.

Stealth Studio Chair Features:

  • Mid back support
  • Zen Wave technology
  • Adjustable height
  • Adjustable armrests
  • 360 degree swivel
  • Active tilt that tilts to your body movements

Things You Can Do To Help & Prevent Lower Back Pain As A Music Producer

As a music producer, you’ll know that you sit for incredible amounts of time & this can have a terrible impact on your back.

Having personally gone through lower back pain & overcoming it multiple times, I wanted to share here what helped me recover from it.

I didn’t realise the ramifications it could have on my back, and it had happened because I was sitting down for marathon periods of time, in a crappy $10, plastic chair that didn’t support me at all.

To recover from it and prevent back pain now, there are a couple of things I do daily to ensure my back muscles are healthy & happy.

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor, this has just worked for me & the information here has been found from healthline.com.

  1. Take frequent breaks. The longer you sit down, the more pressure you’ll experience on your nerves. Over time, it can also weaken your glutes, which lead to overuse of your lower back muscles or hip-flexors. Taking a break every 45mins – 60mins, standing up, walking around & doing some exercise will help massively.
  2. Do stretches. By finding good lower back stretches, you can implement these into your day. These will not only help you reduce your back pain, but also strengthen your muscles.
  3. Exercise. Doing low intensity exercise in areas that you’re weak in can really help build up muscle you may be lacking in certain areas. For example, my back really hurt doing squats. So I started to build up slowly from assisted bodyweight squats, then when I was ready, full range non-assisted all the way to pistol squats. This helped to build the muscle slowly & for it to adjust to the new strain it was under.
  4. Stand while working. If you can get a standing desk, this will massively help your back pain. An upright position is great for your back because it puts the discs in your lower back in alignment & reduces the pressure on them.
  5. Foam roll. Foam rolling is like an overpowered version of stretching. It will dig into pressure points and loosen up knots in your muscles. You can do a number of foam roll exercises for back pain.

Stretches I Do To Alleviate My Back Pain

Knee-to-chest

This stretch feels absolutely great and is extremely relaxing.

(it’s nice to have a back stretch routine before bed as it winds you down nicely for a good sleep)

It works on relaxing your hips, thighs and glutes.

Child’s Pose

This is a stretch that I learned from doing yoga (along with the downward dog & crane). It’s awesome for stretching out your hamstrings and spinal extensors & will help relieve tension all along your spine.

It also promotes flexibility and helps to loosen up tighter lower back problems that could be causing you your pain.

Studio Chair Buying Guide

Mesh vs Padding

When buying a new chair for your studio, you’ll come across a wide range of options that include both padded and mesh exteriors.

So how do you know which is best for you?

There are some problems that come with both mesh and padding and we’re going to list everything you might run into, if you were to get either.

There are also a lot of benefits, so we’re going to weigh up the pros & cons of each.

Starting with Mesh.

Mesh Pros

  1. Breathable material. If you get hot in the studio then mesh is a great material for airflow. Because it has holes in the design, you’ll feel much cooler when sitting in one. Depending on where you live this can be a benefit or a con. For hot environments, mesh is best.
  2. Soft mesh is extremely comfortable. Many people who use soft mesh seats rave about the experience of sitting in one because “mesh… sink[s] down a bit more and give[s] the user the feeling of floating” (btod.com). This is found is high end mesh chairs, most low end will be hard and very uncomfortable.
  3. Ergonomic posture support. Mesh chairs are much better for improving your posture and helping with back pain, and are mostly more supportive than soft chairs. “Mesh chairs offer an array of adjustments and provide a firm, supportive structure” (wave-office).
  4. You can upholster mesh. By doing this it prevents the abrasive and hard nature of the mesh from causing discomfort when sitting in a music studio for hours on end. It also allows for the breathability of the mesh and the great lumbar support structure it provides.
  5. Easy to clean. If you get a stain on a mesh chair, it’s relatively easy to clean off. You also won’t notice much cosmetic wear in the material over time &, if treated properly, it will look like a new couple years down the line.

Mesh Cons

  1. Not all mesh seats have good comfort. This can be uncomfortable for you if you like cushioning on the seat. If you’re buying lower end mesh seats, the mesh will be hard. If you’re buying high end mesh, they will be softer. So, depending on your price range, you need to look out
  2. The seats can sag over time. If you’re sitting in your chair for long periods of time (like music producers do), then, even with a soft mesh seat, you’ll run into some problems. Users of soft mesh seats experience a feeling of floating due to the expansion of the mesh when sitting on it. However, this expansion will cause sagging over time and you may have to replace the entire seat.
  3. It’s is abrasive. The material isn’t exactly silk. It can cause damage to clothing and catch your skin. If you’re buying lower end mesh chairs, they can be uncomfortable and can cause skin irritation. If you go for high quality, you’ll experience this less.

Padding Pros

  1. Extreme comfort. Padding obviously has all the benefits of being comfortable & soft. Most are made with cold cure foam, which is a premier type of foam used in luxury car seats, theatre seats and more. It allows for resilient support to accommodate your full weight. When you stand up, it pops back into the original shape, which means you can sit for months in your chair and still experience sitting in it like it was the first day you got it.
  2. Soft material that doesn’t irritate. Most padded seats will be upholstered with either leather or soft fabric that won’t irritate your skin or catch on your clothes.

Padding Cons

  1. Poor lumbar support. Most padded chairs don’t have the same ergonomic lumbar support that mesh chairs provide. This makes them a lot less comfortable for people with back pain & for long sessions in the studio.
  2. Unbreathable material. The material used isn’t breathable & doesn’t provide airflow. If you’ve been in a studio, you’ll know they can get really hot. With all the equipment running and audio treatment acting like insulation you’ll want a cooler chair with more airflow for studio use.
  3. Hard to clean. If you get a fabric chair, it’ll be very susceptible to stains, those annoying little fabric balls & will be hard to clean.

What’s The Best Style Chair for Back Pain?

If you’re experiencing lower back pain, the best chair you can choose is one with full lumbar support.

Mesh chairs provide ergonomic support structures for your back and they can help improve your posture & reduce the aches and pains that come with sitting for hours on end trying to perfect that mix, that still sounds like trash.

cTSu ZV

You’ll want to go for a chair that has ahigh mesh back and an adjustable headrest. This will give you full support, and also give you incredible comfort.

But beware when investing in a mesh chair, because lower end chairs will use hard material, that don’t provide comfort.

(it’ll feel like you’re sitting on one of those metal bus stop seats and your ass will go numb)

However, if you go for the high end, then you’ll experience a beautiful soft mesh caressing your ass, as you so elegantly mix your masterpiece in comfort.

I get that not all of us have the money for high end mesh, so to combat this, you can grab a lower end with a soft, seat cushion.

Short Recap:

  • Buy an ergonomic lumbar support with a breathable mesh back.
  • Make sure it has a soft, padded seat if it’s lower in price.
  • Get a chair with an adjustable headrest.
  • Make sure it has adjustable height.
  • Throw your mix in the bin.

Are Gaming Chairs Any Good?

gaming chair x rocker monsoon

Although gaming chairs may look cool & like you’re about to step into a 1600 horsepower V8 Ferrari, they’re not all that great for back pain & lumbar support.

When getting a new chair for your recording studio, I’d suggest to avoid the gaming chairs route.

They often use low quality materials and are built poorly. If you’re looking for a chair that will help correct your posture & help your back pain, then gaming chairs aren’t a good choice.

Why?

Gaming chairs just don’t provide the lumbar support your back will need & aren’t actually built with any.

They don’t have an ergonomic design & most have an entirely flat backrest.

This comes with a small, adjustable lumbar pillow support, which is held in place with a couple straps.

It’s a way to cut back on costs & is a “one size fits all” solution.

Not everyone is going to like the pillow and its comfort factor.

Some might think it’s too soft, or others too hard. The fact that you can’t adjust it to your needs sucks more than the first track you made on Fruity Loops.

Properly built, office chairs with an ergonomic design have built in lumbar support systems.

This means you’ll be able to adjust them to your particular needs & have the most comfortable and supported experience when sitting in one.

Where Can I Get a Chair on a Budget?

If you’re looking for a new music production chair, then your best bet to find the lowest prices is by checking Amazon or Ebay for the chair you want.

They consistently have some of the best prices available.

It’s worth checking Ebay for people who have bought chairs and don’t want them, or offices that are clearing out a number of chairs they don’t need anymore.

You can pick up an absolute steal by checking through Ebay.

Buying a Used Chair

used office chair

I understand that office chairs are ridiculously priced.

Trust me, when I was looking for an office chair, I was honestly shocked by how much they cost – but, I suppose you can’t put a price on the health of your back.

If you don’t have a lot of money to drop on an office chair, it’s always worth checking Ebay for used chairs.

The best brands to look for are Steelcase & Herman Miller, as these are the brands you’ll find in all the top studios.

There often places closing down, or offices that need to get rid of chairs, so you can pick them up really cheap on Ebay.

When searching for the best music production chairs on Reddit, I found this advice that might come useful when purchasing a new studio chair.

  • Check eBay
  • Local classifieds
  • FB marketplace

You’ll need to be aware that, when buying chairs from places like these, there are no buyer guarantees (apart from eBay).

That means you need to be sure the chair is in good working order before you buy.

To make sure the chair isn’t faulty, if you’re local, go and check for yourself, sit on it and see if it suits your needs.

When purchasing online, ask the seller to send videos of it in action & close up pictures so you can make an informed decision before deciding to purchase.

Either way, it’s best to look locally for these things.

Remember to maintain 2m distance 😉
