Now you have the notes in the B major scale, you can use chord scale formulas to work out the string of chords and the quality of each chord (whether it’s major, minor or diminished). Just plug the formulas below into your scale.

Below are the major & minor chord scale formulas:

  • Major: major, minor, minor, major, major, minor, diminished
  • Minor: minor, diminished, major, minor, minor, major, major

Now, because B major is a major key, you’ll want to use the major formula to find the chords. This is: major, minor, minor, major, major, minor, diminished.

Using the chord scale formula, the B major chord scale consists of:

  • B major
  • C# minor
  • D# minor
  • E major
  • F# major
  • G# minor
  • A# diminished

Then, once you know what the chords are, you can use chord spellings to find out which notes make up each of the chords. If you don’t know your basic triads, then this will help you find out how to play the chord scale.

The most common chord spellings are:

  • Major – 1, 3, 5
  • Minor – 1, b3, 5
  • Diminished – 1, b3, b5
  • Augmented – 1, 3, #5

If we take the 3rd chord in the B flat major chord scale – it’s a D# minor chord. This means, you’d use the minor spelling (1, b3, 5) listed above, but use the D# major scale because the root note of the chord is D#.

You then take the D# major scale, count the 1 note (D#), then the 3 note, and move it a semi-tone down (F#), then the 5 note (A#).

This gives you a D# minor chord. You can use this process to re-create every other chord in the scale. Just make sure you are using the major scale, of the root note of the chord you want to make, and the correct spelling (minor, diminished, major, etc).

Common Chord Progressions in B Major

Once you know how to play the chords, you can start to write melodies. It’s best to use some pre-made chord progressions because these already sound good as they are. You can use these as a kickstart for your melody ideas.

To use chord progressions you take the roman numerals and plug them into the chord scale you have. Each chord scale will have roman numerals as the degree of the chord. Match these with the chord progressions and you’ll know which chords to play in succession of one and other.

NOTE: Anything with a 6, 7, 9 after it, is an extension chord, lowercase = minor, and uppercase = major.
